State Examination for Teaching

Here you will find information about the first state examination for teaching at gymnasiums, about processes and content in the field of fashion and aesthetics.

We accept requests to accept state examinations at the beginning of the registration period. The examination period is determined by the examination office of the Hessische Lehrkräfteakademie.

We test in an educational or sociological focus, either verbally or in writing. When contacting us, please indicate in which part and area of ​​the examination you would like to be examined.

Step 1: Take a look at the research projects of Prof. Dr. Alexandra Karentzos and the Fashion & Aesthetics department. Are you interested?

Step 2: Choose a topic from the areas of art and fashion, visual culture studies, gender and body studies, post- and decolonial theories, migration studies, youth culture studies, aesthetic education. Limit your question and topic area within this spectrum.

Step 3: Arrange a consultation appointment via Prof. Karentzos' personal website (if you have any problems, please contact the secretariat: ).

Step 4: During consultation hours, we will discuss the area and form of the examination, the chosen topic focus (see Step 2) and your initial literature research. Please prepare for the appointment.

Step 5: Send us the completed form by email in time for signature.

Step 6: Work on the topic independently and create an abstract on the topic with the central literature references by the end of December (spring exam) or June (fall exam) and send it by email to .

The abstract should be structured in this way:

  • Derivation of the topic, core statements (if necessary with pictures)
  • Own questioning, reasoning
  • Theoretical positioning, clarification of terms, explanation of relevant approaches/models
  • Summary of relevant findings (if necessary with image analyses), including open questions/limitations of the literature used

Step 7: Arrange a consultation appointment to discuss the abstract as well as questions and suggestions about the abstract.

Step 8: You appear for the exam. The dates are coordinated by the Hessische Lehrkräfteakademie – we cannot answer questions about them.

Written examination

There will be two questions in the written exam (depending on the topic, with pictures to be analysed). You will have four hours to edit.

Oral examination

In the oral exam, you present your topic area in a critical and reflective way in a 30-minute conversation and we discuss together.

Since this is a scientific work, the criteria of good scientific practice must be met!

Please be sure to use sufficient specialist literature to accommodate the complexity of your topic. Quote uniformly, but a specific style of citation is not specified. Please use gender-appropriate spelling, as provided for at TU-Darmstadt.

Registration for the first state examination in educational sciences at TU Darmstadt takes place exclusively via a registration system. Individual pledges by examiners are no longer required and will no longer be accepted.
