The Section of Fashion & Aesthetics is affiliated with the Department of Human Sciences (FB3) of TU Darmstadt. Learn more about our main research topics and projects and about studying and teaching.
Fashion & Aesthetics explores the interconnections between fashion, aesthetics, art and society. The variety of fashions in clothing, hairstyle, cosmetics and the shaping of the human body are set in their cultural and historic contexts and examined based on social, artistic changes and disruptions, including their representation in the media.
Studying at the Section of Fashion & Aesthetics is about placing everyday fashion practices in a broader social, historical and aesthetic context, as fashion is far more than clothing, it “imagines, subjectivises and collectivises orders of space, nation, culture, class, ethnicity, body and gender” (Gaugele/Kastner 2015, cf. Craig 1993).
The research projects of the Section of Fashion & Aesthetics examine culture theories, concepts of the body and identity as well as migration and diversity throughout the history of art and cultural studies.
