Migration is currently considered one of the central themes of contemporary art and is currently experiencing a boom in the art world, at exhibitions and at biennales. The Ulmer Verein & working group on Art Theory and Art Production in the Horizon of Global Migration was founded a decade ago at the LMU Munich.
It is an important voice in the debate on the effects of global migration on art and on the places and institutions of artistic practice. Its work has been published in numerous workshops, conferences, and key publications.
The Art and Migration – Revisiting the Future event will celebrate the working group’s tenth anniversary in Munich, where it was founded. We will reflect on the members & joint exploration of art and migration while also peering into the future. How has political activism changed the role of art? How can we counteract mechanisms of exclusion? How will migration research in art and cultural studies look in the future?
After a closed session, the public event will begin on the afternoon of 1 December with research fellows from global dis:connect giving short, stimulating overviews of their research topics. The programme will continue in the evening with a screening of Make Up the World, a film created by our members Susanne Weirich and Robert Bramkamp. The event will conclude with a dinner outing (Dutch treat).
