History of Fashion and Aesthetics at Technical University of Darmstadt

Since the 1970s, history of art focussing on fashion and aesthetics has been part of studying in the field of vocational pedagogy and has become an integrated part of the teacher education degree programmes B.Ed./M.Ed. Body Care and the degree programmes B.A./M.A. Pedagogy (education).

Respective courses had originally been held by vocational education teachers (particularly Prof. Dr. Hans Lehmberg). In 1992, a Wella-funded University Lectureship of Fashion and Aesthetics was established that was alternately taken by art historians and cultural scholars. This lectureship was transformed in 2007 to a Wella-funded professorship which became a regular Professorship of Fashion and Aesthetics at the end of this funding agreement.

The current holder of the professorship and head of the independent Section of Fashion & Aesthetics is the art historian Prof. Dr. Alexandra Karentzos. A key focus in teaching and research is on the history of art and civilisation and their critical reflection based on theoretical and social contexts.
